Capturing the Unspoken

Overview

Using Applied Theatre to Inform Policy and Programming

In 2009, ADCID’s research project, Capturing the Unspoken: Using Applied theatre to Engage the Community and Inform HIV/AIDS Policy, explored the fusion of applied theatre and community-based research by devising a methodology for creating dialogue and recording community revelations and desires of those infected/affected by HIV/AIDS. We developed this participatory methodology, while simultaneously collecting community data on environmental health issues for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, and on attitudes about gender and peer influences that increase youth vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. This was used by partner organizations in South Africa to inform more reflective HIV/AIDS policy and programs. The community workshop report was also included as an appendix to a larger research study conducted by the Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlement, South Africa on the living conditions of people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in formal and informal settlements. This project, funded by Health Canada, contributed to the improvement of global health outcomes by developing and promoting knowledge of an innovative approach that can be used for health research and with organizations working globally and within Canada to increase community participation in policy and program development.
