For this approach to scale in a meaningful way, the community has to be perceived, engaged, and capacitated in a radically different way. By focusing on enabling capacities for local community members to explore issues and engage in strategic conversation, we propose that CBOs can form holistic strategies that empower, nurture and sustain local innovation.
Staff at a local CBO, can then move beyond having the capacity to administer services and deliver messages, to develop more broadly what Robert Chambers (2012) refers to as “the power to empower”. We believe it is through an integration of services provision, in conjunction with the facilitation of group inquiry and empowering relationships that more sustainable conditions for change emerge.
